Antes Que A Noite Chegue

“Before the night comes”, is the name of the program that marks the 20th anniversary of the Lídia Jorge Municipal Library, which will feature the presence of the writer born in Boliqueime, and a group of Albufeira residents who will give a brief commented reading of the work “Misericórdia”.

In this book, we have Dona Alberti’s perspective and other senses on the movements of the world, from from the “Hotel Paraíso”, that is, from the home where she finds herself: “Here where I am, even in spring, when the days are usually as long as the nights, the night is always longer than the day. Knowing this, it is precisely in the middle of the night that the night comes to me, asking me unimaginable questions as if it were that very old brown cat called the sphinx.”

It should be noted that the writer Lídia Jorge unanimously won the 2022 Grand Prize for Novel and Short Story from the Portuguese Writers Association (APE), with the work “Misericórdia”, whose main character was inspired by her mother.

According to the jury, it is a novel of rare discursive maturity, a hymn to reading, literature and the transformative power of both in human life.

“Antes que a noite chega” sent 100 books to several people from Albufeira. Some of these will read a paragraph and discuss their choice. As usual, there will be birthday cake. But the queen of this celebration will be the Word: before the night comes.

“Antes que a noite chegue “, é o nome do programa que assinala o 20.º aniversário da Biblioteca Municipal Lídia Jorge, que contará com a presença da escritora nascida em Boliqueime, e de um conjunto de albufeirenses que farão uma breve leitura comentada da obra “Misericórdia”.

Neste livro, temos o olhar e os restantes sentidos de Dona Alberti em torno dos movimentos do mundo, a partir do “Hotel Paraíso”, ou seja, do lar onde se encontra: “Aqui onde me encontro, mesmo em tempo de Primavera, quando os dias costumam ser do tamanho das noites, a noite é sempre mais longa que o dia. Sabendo disso, é precisamente a meio da noite que a noite vem ter comigo, dirigindo-me perguntas inimagináveis como se fosse aquele gato pardo, muito antigo, que se chamava esfinge.”

Refira-se que a escritora Lídia Jorge venceu por unanimidade o Grande Prémio de Romance e Novela 2022 da Associação Portuguesa de Escritores (APE), com a obra “Misericórdia”, cuja personagem principal foi inspirada na sua mãe.

Segundo o júri, trata-se de um romance de uma rara maturidade discursiva, um hino à leitura, à literatura e ao poder transformador de ambas na vida do humano.

“Antes que a noite chegue” fez chegar 100 livros a diversos albufeirenses. Destes, alguns irão ler um parágrafo e dissertar sobre essa escolha. Como habitualmente, haverá bolo de aniversário. Mas a rainha desta celebração será mesmo a Palavra: antes que a noite chegue.
