As part of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the “Ricky” book collection will be presented at the Portimão Municipal Library.

The co-author, Ricardo Monis, had a physical disability called spinal muscular atrophy II, which essentially causes muscle wasting over time, requiring the use of a wheelchair to move around, and based himself on the main character (Ricky).

He graduated in Sociology from the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) in Lisbon.

Lucas Chipenda is the other co-author of the “Ricky” collection. He lived in Angola until 2016, when he returned to Portugal to enter Higher Education, but did not complete it. He worked as a tattoo artist and is currently studying to enter the world of football, which has always been his passion.

Illustrator Nuno Salvada has a master’s degree in Drawing from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon. During his childhood, he was inseparable from a pencil or a pen, imagining characters and other worlds that would make his daily life more magical. During his adolescence, he won several awards in the Amadora Comic Book Competition and, more recently, 2nd place in the Odemira Comic Book Competition.

After meeting Ricardo and Lucas, it became clear that he shared the same initiative for a more inclusive and empathetic society. It was then that he got to work to give life and a face to Ricky and his friends.

The authors believed that it is important to educate and raise awareness among children, in a subtle and fun way, about pathologies that they may not be aware of, but also about how to deal with them and with those who have them.

The collection will be presented by Ricardo’s mother (Alice Monis) and Nuno Salvada (illustrator).

No âmbito do Dia Internacional da Pessoas com Deficiência, será apresentada na Biblioteca Municipal de Portimão a coleção de livros “Ricky”.

O coautor, Ricardo Monis, era portador de uma deficiência física chamada atrofia muscular espinhal II, que essencialmente provoca um definhamento a nível muscular ao longo do tempo, obrigando ao uso de uma cadeira de rodas para se mover, e baseou-se nele próprio para construir a personagem principal (Ricky).

Licenciou-se em Sociologia pelo Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) em Lisboa.

Lucas Chipenda é o outro coautor da coleção “Ricky”. Viveu em Angola até 2016, altura em que regressou a Portugal para ingressar no Ensino Superior, não tendo completado o mesmo. Trabalhou como tatuador e atualmente está a estudar para entrar no mundo do futebol, que sempre foi a sua paixão.

O ilustrador Nuno Salvada é mestre em Desenho pela Faculdade de Belas-Artes de Lisboa. Durante a infância era inseparável de um lápis ou uma caneta, imaginando personagens e outros mundos que tornassem o seu quotidiano mais mágico. Durante a adolescência ganhou vários prémios no Concurso de Banda Desenhada da Amadora e, mais recentemente, um 2.º lugar no Concurso de Banda Desenhada de Odemira.

Após um contacto com o Ricardo e o Lucas, ficou patente que partilhava a mesma iniciativa de uma sociedade mais inclusiva e empática. Foi então que meteu mãos à obra para dar vida e cara ao Ricky e aos amigos.

Os autores acreditavam que é importante educar e consciencializar as crianças, de uma forma subtil e divertida, sobre patologias que elas possam não conhecer, mas também sobre a forma de lidar com as mesmas e com quem as tem.

A apresentação da coleção estará a cargo da mãe de Ricardo (Alice Monis) e Nuno Salvada (ilustrador).
