“The Salem WITCHES was an act of desperation.” Words by playwright Arthur Miller about the genesis of this play, based on historical facts. In 1692, in the small American community of Salem, women and men are persecuted and tried for witchcraft. Rumors and lies are rampant and no one seems safe from accusation or revenge. Premiered in 1953, The Crucible was conceived as a parallel to the darkness of McCarthyism that was eating away at the heart of America, consumed by the anti-communist fever that also claimed Miller’s life. From its epicentre – a primeval fascination with paranoia, which sacrifices individuals in its collective fury – multiple echoes resound today. It is with this that Nuno Cardoso continues his inquiry into the foundations of community life, in another essay on the blindness of social man. Miller again: “Underlying concerns with justice, the play evokes a lethal stew of illicit sexuality, fear of the supernatural and political manipulation.”

“As Bruxas de Salém foi um ato de desespero.” Palavras do dramaturgo Arthur Miller sobre a génese desta peça, baseada em factos históricos. Em 1692, na pequena comunidade americana de Salém, mulheres e homens são perseguidos e julgados por bruxaria. O rumor e a mentira incandescem e ninguém parece a salvo da acusação ou da vingança. Estreada em 1953, As Bruxas de Salém foi pensada como um paralelo às trevas do macarthismo que corroíam o coração da América, consumida pela febre anticomunista, que também vitimou Miller. Do seu epicentro – um fascínio primevo pela paranoia, que sacrifica indivíduos na sua fúria coletiva – ressoam hoje múltiplos ecos. É com ela que Nuno Cardoso prossegue a inquirição dos alicerces da vida em comunidade, num outro ensaio sobre a cegueira do homem social. De novo Miller: “Subjacente às preocupações com a justiça, a peça evoca um caldo letal de sexualidade ilícita, medo do sobrenatural e manipulação política.”
