Celebration of the 452nd Anniversary of Lagos’ Elevation to City Status

It was on January 27, 1573 that the young king D. Sebastião, immortalized in the iconic sculpture by João Cutileiro on Praia Gil Eanes, recognized Lagos through its elevation to city status, establishing the residence of the Governor of the Kingdom of Algarve here and reinforcing -a as one of the most important locations in the History of Portugal, especially in the period of the Portuguese Discoveries.

After 452 years, the municipality prepared some activities for the respective celebration, with the program also marked by the celebration of the Avenida Mercado Centenary.

Foi a 27 de janeiro de 1573 que o jovem rei D. Sebastião, eternizado na icónica escultura de João Cutileiro na Praia Gil Eanes, reconheceu Lagos através da sua elevação a cidade, fixando aqui a residência do Governador do Reino do Algarve e reforçando-a como uma das mais importantes localidades da História de Portugal, em especial no período dos Descobrimentos portugueses.

Passados 452 anos, o município preparou algumas atividades para a respetiva celebração, sendo a programação também marcadas pela comemoração do Centenário do Mercado da Avenida.
