Metallica is an American heavy metal band originally from Los Angeles but based in San Francisco. Their repertoire includes fast, heavy, melodic, instrumental and aggressive musicality, which established them as pioneers of thrash metal. Metallica formed in 1981 after James Hetfield responded to an ad that Lars Ulrich had placed in the local newspaper. Its current lineup features founding drummer Lars Ulrich, and founding drummer, vocalist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield, as well as lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo.
