Lançamento de “Wagner – a Máquina de Guerra de Putin” na Biblioteca Municipal de Portimão

“Wagner- Putin’s War Machine”, a book by Rui Pedro Antunes and João Porfírio, will be launched at the Portimão Municipal Library, as part of the celebrations for the City Day.

The book will be presented by Cátia Bruno, International Editor of “Observador”.

“In Ukraine, two journalists travelled through a country at war and spoke with those who fought, suffered and were part of the Wagner Group, Putin’s war machine. Rui Pedro Antunes and João Porfírio were in Kiev, in a room with Volodymyr Zelensky, when a plane leaving Moscow for Saint Petersburg exploded in mid-air. Shortly afterwards, as they crossed Maidan Square, they received the news: the leader of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prighozin, and his right-hand man, Dmitry Utkin, were among the fatal victims of the accident.

The Wagner Group was precisely the main target of the report. After all, what had really happened? Was it, as everything seemed to indicate, an attack carried out on Vladimir Putin’s orders? In any case, it was the outcome of many months of growing tension between the Wagners — one of the most important military forces in the invasion of Ukraine — and the supreme leader of Russia. Putin would certainly not leave the future of the mercenaries to chance.

Added reasons to continue with the search that gave rise to this book, on a journey of three thousand kilometers, from the combat front in Ukraine to Poland, in which the authors spoke with those who fought, suffered and were part of the violent and relentless Wagner Group.”

Rui Pedro Antunes was born in Lisbon in 1986, but grew up and lived in Salvaterra de Magos until moving to Coimbra at the age of 17. It was there that he graduated in Journalism.

He began his professional career at Diário de Notícias, where he worked for more than eight years. He has also worked for “Observador” for eight years, where he serves as the newspaper’s Political Editor and for Rádio Observador. He is the author of two non-fiction books that are the result of journalistic investigations and co-author of five others. In August and September 2023, he was the “Observador” special envoy to Ukraine and, from Kiev to Donbass, in a team with the photojournalist João Porfírio collected the material that would give rise to several reports in Observador and the book «Wagner: Putin’s War Machine».

João Porfírio, born in Portimão in 1995, went to Lisbon to study journalism and photojournalism. He has been a journalist for 10 years and is currently the photo editor of the newspaper Observador, where he has worked since 2017, having previously worked for Agência Lusa, Semanário SOL and Jornal i.

He was Observador’s special correspondent for the presidential elections in the United States of America and Brazil, and the war in Ukraine and Iraq. In Portugal, he covers issues related to politics, society and culture on a daily basis. Between collective and individual exhibitions, he has already exhibited more than 20 pieces of his work in Portugal and abroad. He won the Estação Imagem Award in 2019 and 2021 in the News category. In 2022 he won the Gabo Award – one of the most important journalism awards in the world – and in 2023 the Gazeta de Fotografia Award – the most prestigious journalism award in Portugal.

“Wagner- A Máquina de Guerra de Putin”, livro da autoria Rui Pedro Antunes e João Porfírio, será lançado na Biblioteca Municipal de Portimão, no âmbito das comemorações do Dia da Cidade.

A obra será apresentada por Cátia Bruno, Editora de Internacional do “Observador”.

“Na Ucrânia, dois jornalistas viajaram por um país em guerra e falaram com quem combateu, sofreu e integrou o Grupo Wagner, a máquina de guerra de Putin. Rui Pedro Antunes e João Porfírio encontravam-se em Kiev, numa sala com Volodymyr Zelensky, quando um avião saído de Moscovo rumo a São Petersburgo explodiu nos ares. Pouco depois, enquanto atravessavam a Praça Maidan, receberam a notícia: o líder do Grupo Wagner, Yevgeny Prighozin, e o seu braço-direito, Dmitry Utkin, estavam entre as vítimas mortais do acidente.

O Grupo Wagner era, precisamente, o alvo principal da reportagem. Afinal, o que teria de facto acontecido? Tratava-se, como tudo parecia indicar, de um atentado perpetrado a mando de Vladimir Putin? Fosse como fosse, era o desenlace de muitos meses de tensão crescente entre os Wagner — uma das forças militares mais importantes na invasão da Ucrânia — e o líder supremo da Rússia. Seguramente, Putin não deixaria o futuro dos mercenários ao acaso.

Razões acrescidas para prosseguir com a busca que deu origem a este livro, numa viagem de três mil quilómetros, da frente de combate na Ucrânia até à Polónia, em que os autores conversaram com quem combateu, sofreu e integrou o violento e implacável Grupo Wagner.”

Rui Pedro Antunes nasceu em Lisboa, em 1986, mas cresceu e viveu em Salvaterra de Magos até se ter mudado para Coimbra aos 17 anos. Foi lá que se licenciou em Jornalismo.

Iniciou a carreira profissional no Diário de Notícias onde esteve mais de oito anos. Há também oito anos que trabalha no “Observador”, onde desempenha as funções de editor de Política do jornal e da Rádio Observador. É autor de dois livros de não-ficção que resultam de investigações jornalísticas e coautor de outros cinco. Em agosto e setembro de 2023 foi o enviado especial do” Observador” à Ucrânia e, de Kiev ao Donbass, em equipa com o fotojornalista João Porfírio, recolheu o material que daria origem a várias reportagens no Observador e ao livro «Wagner: a máquina de guerra de Putin».

João Porfírio, nascido em Portimão, em 1995, foi para Lisboa estudar jornalismo e fotojornalismo. É jornalista há 10 anos e atualmente é editor de fotografia do jornal Observador, onde trabalha desde 2017, tendo anteriormente passado pela Agência Lusa, pelo Semanário SOL e o Jornal i.

Foi enviado especial do Observador às eleições presidenciais dos Estados Unidos da América e do Brasil, à guerra da Ucrânia e do Iraque. Em Portugal cobre diariamente assuntos relacionados com política, sociedade e cultura. Entre exposições coletivas e individuais conta já com mais de 20 mostras do seu trabalho em Portugal e no estrangeiro. Venceu o Prémio Estação Imagem em 2019 e 2021 na categoria de Notícias. Em 2022 ganhou o prémio Gabo – um dos mais importantes prémios de jornalismo do mundo – e em 2023 o prémio Gazeta de Fotografia — o mais prestigiado prémio de jornalismo em Portugal.
