January, whose name comes from the god Janus (tutelary god of all beginnings, rules over everything that begins — Janus Patulcius — or that ends — Janus Clusius —, is the patron of all endings and new beginnings, hence being represented by two faces, one backwards and one forwards) and was added to the calendar by Numa Pompilius, successor of Romulus, a historical-mythical character who, according to Plutarch, founded Rome in 753 BC. Janus was invoked to ward off evil spirits from homes and could not fail to be invoked in the month of January. Everything indicates that the Janeiras have their origins in these pagan cults, which Christianity strengthened after the celebrations of the Nativity.

The traditional songs aim to bring good luck to those who listen to them; in return, those who sing and play receive gifts. In times gone by, people would receive sausages and sweet breads to help them through the first few months of cold weather, which meant an empty pantry. Today, this is no longer the case and most groups gather in one space to sing the Janeiras to whoever they want. This is what will happen in the Hall of the Casa do Povo in Paderne, with several singing groups. Not to be missed. 

By tradition, the exhibition of Nativity Scenes also ends on January 6th. So, if you haven’t visited it yet, you can still do so in the Parish of Guia, at the Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters and in Paderne, held by the Scouts.

Janeiro, cujo nome provém do deus Jano (deus tutelar de todos os começos, rege tudo o que começa — Janus Patulcius — ou que se fecha – Janus Clusius —, é o patrono de todos os finais e recomeços, daí ser representado por duas caras, uma para trás e outra para a frente) e foi acrescentado ao calendário por Numa Pompílio, sucessor de Rómulo, personagem histórico-mítico que, segundo Plutarco, teria fundado Roma em 753 a.C. Jano era invocado para afastar das casas os espíritos funestos e não podia deixar de ser invocado no mês de Janeiro. Tudo indica que as janeiras tenham origem nesses cultos pagãos, que o cristianismo potenciou após as celebrações da Natividade.

Os cantares tradicionais tem assim por objetivo lançar a boa sorte a quem os ouve; em troca, quem canta e toca, recebe os seus presentes. Em tempos idos, recebiam chouriças e pães doces, para suportar os primeiros meses e frio, que eram sinónimo de despensa vazia. Hoje, já não é assim e a maioria dos grupos reúne-se num só espaço para cantar as Janeiras a quem desejar. É o que vai acontecer no Salão da Casa do Povo de Paderne, com diversos grupos de cantares. A não perder. 

Por tradição, é também a 6 de janeiro que a exposição dos Presépios termina. Por isso, se ainda não visitou, ainda o pode fazer na Freguesia da Guia, nos Bombeiros Voluntários de Albufeira e em Paderne, feito pelos Escutas.
