Presépio Dos Escutas De Paderne | Nativity Scene of the Scouts of Paderne

The village of Paderne once again offers us a Nativity scene that complies with tradition. This year, the Nativity scene will be inaugurated on the day after Our Lady of the Conception: “the wheat is laid down”, that is, small seeds of wheat, corn, rye or canary seed that are placed in small ceramic or clay saucers to form the “searinhas”, which will decorate the nativity scenes, which are also different from those usually made in other regions of the country.

The Algarve nativity scene does not represent the scene of the Bethlehem grotto, as it preserves its medieval roots, with origins in French Provence: thus, it is set up as a throne or staircase, with the baby Jesus standing at the top, assuming himself as the glorious, triumphant Baby Jesus, the Saviour of the world and the universe. In the wealthier homes, the steps are covered with hand-embroidered lace linen tablecloths, imitating the main altar of churches, while in the more humble homes, a more modest altar is set up on a chest of drawers covered with a white lace tablecloth, with the baby in the centre. The steps of the throne where the baby is placed are progressively narrower and scattered along the various steps or next to the Baby, where the small seeds are placed, as well as oranges, dried fruits and flowers, or various vegetables, such as myrtle, laurel, rosemary, mastic and medlar. A very peculiar characteristic of this village is to decorate the throne with oranges. The presence of the small seeds in the nativity scene is understood by the people as a blessing. They are placed there for the Baby to “bless them” and to “give plenty of bread for the crops”. After the festivities, it was also customary to place the small seeds in the field so that they would grow because they were blessed. Later, the wheat collected was used for home remedies.

A Aldeia de Paderne brinda-nos uma vez mais com um Presépio que cumpre a tradição. Este ano, o Presépio inaugura-se no dia a seguir ao de Nossa Senhora da Conceição: “deitam-se os trigos”, ou seja, pequenas sementes de trigo, milho, centeio ou alpista que são colocadas em pequenos pires de louça ou de barro para formar as “searinhas”, que enfeitarão os presépios, também eles diferentes dos habitualmente feitos noutras regiões do país.

O presépio algarvio não representa o cenário da gruta de Belém, na medida em que conserva as raízes medievais, com origens na Provença francesa: assim, é armado em trono ou escadaria, com o menino Jesus em pé, no alto, assumindo-se como Menino Jesus glorioso, triunfante, o Salvador do mundo e do universo. Nas casas mais abastadas, os degraus são cobertos com toalhas de linho rendadas e bordadas à mão, imitando o altar-mor das igrejas e nas mais humildes um altar mais modesto é armado sobre uma cómoda coberta com uma toalha de renda branca, com o menino ao centro. Os degraus do trono onde o menino é colocado são progressivamente mais estreitos e espalhadas pelos vários degraus ou junto ao Menino, onde ficam as searinhas, bem como laranjas, frutos secos e flores, ou verduras diversas, como a murta, o loureiro, o alecrim, a aroeira e a nespereira. Uma característica, muito peculiar desta Aldeia, é ornamentar o trono com laranjas. A presença das searinhas no presépio é compreendida pelo povo como uma bênção. São colocadas para o Menino “as abençoar” e para “dar muito pão às sementeiras”. Depois das festas, havia também o costume de colocar as searinhas no campo para crescerem porque estavam abençoadas. Mais tarde, o trigo recolhido era para as mezinhas caseiras.
