The Rise of Italian Cinema in the poster collection of the Faro Municipal Museum

The Municipal Museum of Faro offers from next Saturday, November 9, from 5 pm: 30, the opportunity to appreciate 11 very rare posters that testify to the rise of Italian cinema and its presence in Portugal at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the artistic quality of its illustrators. A good reason to stop by the museum and discover another of its unique collections.

The rise of Italian cinema (1908-1915)

In Italy, One of the birthplaces of cinema, it was born at the beginning of the 20th century, a film industry that from an early age sought to conquer the international market. The rise of Italian cinema was only possible thanks to the success achieved by historical and biblical epics such as Quo Vadis? (1913), realistic dramas such as The Emigrant (1915) and “Divas films” such as La storia di un Pierrot (1913), starring Francesca Bertini (1892-1885). They are examples of an art that won over viewers all over the world, including Portugal, as these posters gathered by collector Joaquim António Viegas (1874-1946) attest.

A poster art

For decades, the poster was the main advertising medium of the Italian film industry. In this sense, production houses such as Savoia Film, Ambrosio Film, Cines and Milano Films hired the services of ateliers specialized in the production of posters, where illustrators such as Léopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944) and Achille Mauzan (1883-1952) worked. The talent of these artists is revealed in their expressiveness, color and dramatic impact, clearly evident in these posters that still captivate the viewer’s gaze, arousing curiosity about the respective films.

O Museu Municipal de Faro oferece a partir do próximo sábado, dia 9 de novembro, a partir das 17:30, a oportunidade de apreciar 11 cartazes raríssimos que testemunham a ascensão do cinema italiano e a sua presença em Portugal no inicio do século XX, assim como a qualidade artística dos seus ilustradores. Uma boa razão para aparecer pelo museu e conhecer mais um dos seus acervos únicos.

Em Itália, um dos berços do cinema, nasceu no início do século XX, uma indústria cinematográfica que desde cedo procurou conquistar o mercado internacional. A ascensão do cinema italiano só foi possível graças ao sucesso alcançado por épicos históricos e bíblicos como Quo Vadis? (1913), dramas realistas como O Emigrante (1915) e “filmes de Divas” como La storia di un Pierrot (1913), protagonizado por Francesca Bertini (1892-1885). São exemplos de uma arte que conquistou espectadores por todo o Mundo, incluindo Portugal, como atestam estes cartazes reunidos pelo colecionador Joaquim António Viegas (1874-1946).
